June 6-10, 2011

• Music in the Contemporary Church
1:00-4:30 p.m., May Schwarz & Guest Faculty.
Identifies issues facing the church in the 21st century. Through readings, discussion, demonstration and site visits, explore the challenges of music in today’s church; examine resources and find faithful ways to address the issues in a variety of contexts. Two semester hours.

Music Technology for Church Musicians
4:45-7:00 p.m., Justin Riley, Adjunct Instructor, Trinity Lutheran Seminary.
Introduces basic use of music technology for worship. Topics include music notation software, live sound reinforcement, audio recording and digital video editing. Technology classroom facilitates a “hands-on” experience. One semester hour.

French Organ Music: Marchand to Messiaen
5:00 – 7:15 p.m., Robert Wisniewski A.A.G.O., Ch.M., Principal Organist/Assistant Director, St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus.
This course will be taught at St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus. Paul Fritts organ: 96 ranks, built 2006.
Participants will gain a fuller understanding of the French organ music tradition as it has developed from the 17th century to the present. Emphasis will be placed on works of major composers intended for liturgical use, with some discussion of the role of organ improvisation in the liturgy. Participants will be exposed to basic improvisational techniques based on some of this repertoire.

June 13-17, 2011

Perspectives in Choral Conducting
1:00-3:15 p.m., Lynda Hasseler, Professor of Music, Chapel Choir Director, Capital University, Columbus.
Explores conducting and rehearsal techniques, and repertoire. Provides opportunity to put conducting techniques into practice. Course may be repeated. One semester hour.

Children’s Choirs
3:30-5:45 p.m., Sally Beske, Youth Choir Director, First Community Church, Marble Cliff, Ohio;  composer and arranger.
An exploration of the world of children’s choirs in the church. Topics include purpose organization, vocal technique, instruments, and literature. One semester hour.

Introduction to Handbells
3:45 – 6:00 p.m., Jane McFadden, Handbell Director, Christ Lutheran Church, Bexley, Ohio; composer and arranger.
Bell choirs, bell-ringing techniques, recruitment, organization, assigning bells, equipment needs, repertoire, and development of skills in bell-ringing. One semester hour.

June 20-24, 2011

The Well-Tempered Organist
1:00 – 3:15 p.m., Paul Thornock, Cathedral Director of Music, St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus.
This course will be taught at St. Joseph Cathedral, Columbus. Paul Fritts organ: 96 ranks, built 2006.
Students will perform two works in contrasting styles for the class and receive coaching on technique, registration, interpretation and historical context.  Organists should be prepared to play important works from the corpus of great literature by great composers like Buxtehude, Bach, Mendelssohn, Franck, Vierne, Widor, and others.  Those enrolled in the class will be assigned practice times on the fine organs in downtown Columbus and will demonstrate marked improvement over the course of the week.

Advanced Handbell Skills
3:45-6:00 p.m., Jane McFadden Director of Handbells, Christ Lutheran Church, Bexley, Ohio; composer and arranger.
Build on basic handbell skills. Develop expertise as a ringer through coordination drills and rhythmic exercises; sight-reading and interpretation considerations. Strengthening enthusiasm and commitment in handbell ensembles; analyzing and correcting problems; taking the handbell choir to a higher level of performance. Class participants must have had previous handbell experience, be comfortable with playing Level 3 music and be ready for a challenge as we work together as a handbell choir. Class must have at least 11 participants. One semester hour.  This course will be taught at Christ Lutheran Church, 2314 East Main Street, Bexley, Ohio

Music and Worship in the African-American Tradition
3:30-7:00 p.m., Raymond Wise, Affiliated Professor of Church Music, Trinity Lutheran Seminary.
A study of the music and worship forms of the African American Christian tradition with emphasis on historical development, an understanding of the African American aesthetic and practical applications for congregational music and worship.  Two semester hours.

June 6-24, 2011 (three-week courses)

Liturgical Choir
10:15-11:45 a.m. (available for credit only for M.A. in Church Music candidates). All students are invited to sing in the choir; no registration required.  Professor May Schwarz, Director Master of Arts in Church Music Program, Trinity Lutheran Seminary. One semester hour.

Church History
8:00 -10:15 a.m. June 6-24, 2011.  Professor  John Karanja, Professor of Church History, Trinity Lutheran Seminary

• Course fee is $434 per semester hour. Audit fee is $217 per semester hour
• All courses listed may be applied for credit toward the Master of Arts in Church Music degree at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio
